A burning pain or discomfort felt in the region of the heart and often rising upwards to the throat. The cause lies in the stomach and oesophagus (gullet) and the burning sensation is usually due to the stomach throwing up its contents along with the acids. It may also be caused by inflammation of the oesophagus or due to ulcers. It is advisable to avoid overeating and spicy food, fruits high in acid content, alcohol and coffee/tea.
