Treatment tips

This is an inherited form of severe anaemia characterised by an abnormality in the haemoglobin (the red blood pigment that carries oxygen). Two forms of the disease occur, thalassemia major in which the defective gene is inherited from both parents, and thalassemia minor, in which the person has only one defective gene and is a carrier, but usually does not show any symptoms.

The symptoms include fatigue, anaemia, blood in the urine, jaundice and enlargement of the spleen. Thalassemia patents must seek medical advice.
