Treatment tips

Varicose Veins

The veins become stretched, distended and twisted. The superficial veins in the legs are often affected, although it may occur elsewhere too. Early symptoms include discomfort and aching legs after a prolonged period of standing still and there may be cramp-like pains. Later, the veins become enlarged and visible as bluish cords beneath the skin. The feet and ankles may swell and the person may feel unusually tired. Eczema and ulceration of the skin may occur.

The cause is distension and failure of the valves in the vein that does not allow the blood to drain properly. This may occur due to congenital factors, obesity, pregnancy, thrombophlebitis and also prolonged standing. Varicose veins that develop during pregnancy usually go down after the birth of the child.
